Special Preparation
BUN- minimize meat in diet one day before the exam
Calcium- do not take calcium supplements 8-12 hours prior to exam
Magnesium- avoid medicines with magnesium (antacids, diuretics) 3 days before the exam
 
FASTING
No food or drink for number of hours specified below prior to the test.
 
Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) – 8 to 12 hours fasting
Uric Acid - 8 hours fasting
Bilirubin (TB, B1, B2) – 4 hours fasting
Lipid Profile- 12 hours fasting
 
FECAL OCCULT BLOOD
 
  • Avoid eating red meat, fish, chocolates, turnips, horseradish, broccoli, cauliflower, cantaloupe, citrus fruits, other Vitamin C containing foods 2-3 days prior to the test. Avoid taking Aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs 2 days before the test.
  • Use a specimen cup obtained from the clinic or a clear, wide-mouth, sterilized bottle.
  • Specimen should not be contaminated with urine, toilet paper or menstrual blood.
  • Collect a pea-sized amount of stool.
  • Do not seal tightly to allow escape of gas.
  • Sample must be brought to the laboratory within an hour of collection.
 
 
SEMEN ANALYSIS
 
  • Container must be very clean. Boil the bottle a few minutes to sterilize container.
  • Refrain from sexual activity 2 to 5 days prior to test.
  • Note time of collection.
  • Avoid exposure of the sample to direct sunlight or extreme temperature
  • Bring the sample to the laboratory within 3 hours of collection.
 
 
URINE COLLECTION
 
    Males – collection may be done at the clinic.
    • Bladder should be moderately full.
    • Foreskin should be completely retracted.
    • Tip of the penis should be thoroughly cleansed.
    • Collect midstream. Sample should fill at least half of container.
    • Bring sample immediately to the laboratory.
     
    Females- collection may be done at the clinic.
    • Collect midstream. Sample should fill at least half of container.
    • Ensure that sample is not contaminated with menstrual blood or vaginal discharge.
    • Bring sample immediately to the laboratory.
 
 
STOOL COLLECTION
 
  • Clear, wide-mouthed bottle should be used. Sterilize the bottle
  • Specimen should not be contaminated with urine or toilet paper.
  • Collect pea-sized stool. Do not overfill container.
  • Do not seal tightly to allow escape of gas
  • Bring sample within an hour after collection
 
 
ORAL GLUCOSE TOLERANCE TEST
 
  • Do not take alcohol and medicines such as corticosteroids, thyroxine, phenytoin and oral contraceptives 24 hours before the examination
  • Observe fasting for at least 8 to at most 12 hours before the procedure
  • Proceed to the laboratory for blood extraction to establish your baseline fasting blood sugar levels
  • After the first blood extraction, you will be asked to drink an oral glucose solution which will be given by the laboratory technician
  • Blood will again be extracted at 1,2 and 3 hours after intake of the glucose solution (bring some reading materials)
 
 
ORAL GLUCOSE CHALLENGE TEST
 
  • No fasting required.
  • Go to the laboratory and drink the oral glucose solution given by the laboratory technician
  • Blood will be extracted 1 hour after intake of the solution
 
 
SPUTUM COLLECTION
 
  • Upon waking, brush teeth and gargle with water
  • Take a deep breath then cough out phlegm/sputum
  • Split phlegm/sputum into a clean and covered specimen bottle/container
  • Bring the specimen to the laboratory within 1 hour of collection
  • Refrigerate specimen if it cannot be brought to the laboratory immediately
  • During transport, put the container with the specimen in ice.
 
 
PROSTATE SPECIFIC ANTIGEN DETERMINATION
 
  • Refrain from sexual activity for 48 hours prior to the exam.
  • Go to laboratory for blood extraction.
 
 
CULTURE AND SENSITIVITY TESTS
 
  • Discharge from the following sites: ear, throat, urethra, vagina and wounds can be collected by the physician and placed in a sterile tube
 
 
ULTRASOUND
 
 
UPPER ABDOMEN
 
  • Take a light, fat free meal the night before the scheduled examination
  • Take two tablets of Dulcolax at 9 pm
  • Do not smoke, eat or drink 8 hours prior to the examination
  • Report to the Ultrasound Department on time
 
 
LOWER ABDOMEN
 
  • No fasting required
  • Drink g-8 glasses of water before the examination
  • Do not urinate or void your bladder until after the examination is done
  • Report to the Ultrasound Department with full bladder
  • Inform the imaging staff if you are pregnant
